Internet of Things (IoT - Internet of Things) - The New Frontier

The history of computing has always been characterized by periods of continuous development until disruptive innovation occurs, bringing immense changes to the technology application landscape. IoT is the latest one. This denomination came around 1999 with the term "Intеrnеt оf Things" - coined for the first time by Kеvіn Aѕhtоn.

Once the initial natural resistance was overcome, new and more interesting uses were gradually envisioned. Its intrinsic characteristics, linked to the development of its structural components, allowed for the maturation experienced today, which surprises everyone every day. The necessary technical standardization only took place at the end of 2016, causing many of the initial experiences to be formalized, thus gaining an irreversible impulse.

This new technological paradigm brings new horizons to use to benefit our daily lives. However, in the business applications, called "Internet of Corporate Things - IoCT", the real potential is revealed, together with the inevitable challenges and new applications, especially in the use for telemetry, sensing and monitoring. effectively useful, there is a broad set of technical characteristics, and that conveniently integrated, bring advantages over the paradigm available until then, where the following points stand out:

• Availability in the market of sensors to get different physical events, such as measurements of temperature, flow, pressure, humidity, etc.

• Regulation of communication protocols, to obtain measurements, which can be parameterized and taken at intervals appropriate to the application’s requirements

• Ability to transmit the data collected, using the existing communications infrastructure, and/or new technologies, which are independent of the communication operators, by using free frequency

• Possibility of data processing for the most different applications, allowing remote control centers to act on such devices, as a reaction to the events occurred

• Availability of management and data processing software, bringing great efficiency to the operational context involved and as support for decision making

• Definition of operating parameters and automatic and systematic evaluation (SLA), making possible to obtain great savings, rationality and compliance with regulations, as well as great economy and high level of sustainability

• Possibility of using extremely low energy consumption components, allowing several activities to be done only with the use of battery, long life

• It allows deployments with reduced investments and remarkable simplicity of installation, dispensing logical and electrical cabling

• Collected, transmitted, processed and used data are subjected to modern security procedures (128-bit AES encryption)

• Wide availability of IT infrastructure, making new versions of products have specific versions for this new reality, such as new database structures, communication protocols, and specially designed equipment (sensors and communication network components) in particular).

The general idea of the applicability of this technology can be visualized in the figure below:
